Work Habits and Academics
Your child will have several assignments during the school day for which he or she is responsible. Due to uncertain circumstances, if your child for any reason is unable to complete an assignment, this will automatically become homework to be completed at home and returned to school the following day.
Reading
With the new EL Curriculum in 3rd grade, your child will be reading complex texts, practicing "close reading" strategies and working on performance tasks related to their reading. There will be an "ALL Block" in which student needs will be met at their independent reading levels.
Independent Reading
Students will be accountable for silent reading related to content learned in class, as well as some free-choice reading.
Writing
Writing will be integrated into the reading curriculum. Students will frequently be "writing to learn" based on the content read in the reading block.
Science
Science will involve many hands-on experiences to help the students grasp some abstract concepts. We will also use technology to expand our learning.
Math
Our math series is focused on problem solving as well as computation. To enhance problem-solving skills, we will be doing a good deal of written responses. Being able to explain your thinking in writing is a higher-level skill and shows deeper understanding. This may be different from past math classes and we will be helping your child to grow in this area. (Multiplication tables are important- practice, practice, practice!!)
3rd Grade Behavior System
Students must remain on task all day, as well as follow all school/classroom rules and procedures. We follow the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system. Our class will discuss and practice appropriate behaviors for our classroom community during the first days of school. Admirable character strengths are taught daily through the Positivity Project. Students will be rewarded for making good choices by receiving Dragon Dollars, which can be spent on various rewards in the classroom. I also use "table points" in my classroom to encourage positive group work. If a student is not adhering to our classroom expectations, a parent will be contacted after two warnings.
Whole-Class Conduct
I keep score on the board for when I am impressed with the overall class behavior (Oh yay!) and when I am not pleased with the overall class behavior (Oh no!). After each subject is taught throughout the day, if the tally count is higher on the positive side, the class will receive one dragon dollar. The class can accumulate points throughout the year towards a celebration.
Birthdays
Please only send in STORE BOUGHT pre-cut or individually packaged treats, and please deliver them to the office. They will be distributed to the class during recess. This will help to avoid disruptions during instructional time.
Snacks
We will be having snack during recess time. Please make sure that this is a nutritious snack. Please do not send canned drinks or any items that are overly messy.
Conferences
If you would like to schedule a conference, please do not hesitate to send a note with your child or e-mail me at [email protected]. We will try to coordinate a time that is convenient for everyone involved.
Contact Information
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child, please feel free to contact me by writing a note, calling the school office at 919-881-4894, or emailing me at [email protected]. Email is the best form of communication due to the easy accessibility.
